NASDAQ OMX Riga awards Broker of the Year and gives Special Award

As part of the Baltic Market Awards ceremony, last night NASDAQ OMX Riga named Nataļja Oha from SEB banka Broker of the Year 2009, while Special Award went to Stockholm School of Economics in Riga. 

 

Nataļja Oha, winner of the Broker of the Year 2009 title, is the top trader in Latvia in terms of number of trades (close to 3500) with Baltic securities. Apart from that, in peer vote Nataļja has received a high esteem as an industry professional from Latvian brokers.

This is the 12th year when the stock exchange awards Broker of the Year. The prize is a challenge award, a statuette by artist Uldis Zariņš featuring a man standing tall and symbolizing growth and development.

 

 

 

 

 

Special Award 2009 went to Stockholm School of Economics in Riga for its more than 15-year-long contribution to promoting the Latvian stock market. Many a financial and securities expert is a graduate of the School. The School curriculum comprises several courses on securities industry. Every year School of Economics supports investment game aimed at encouraging young people to take interest in securities market.

As a rule, Special Award is for outstanding contribution to the Latvian securities market and its development, and was first given in 2000. Up to now, the recipients include bank and media representatives as well as companies.

During the Baltic Market Awards ceremony, the best students’ research papers in 2009 on the topic of the Baltic and/or Latvian securities market were announced.

Ernesta Orlovaite and Aurimas Račas from Stockholm School of Economics in Riga with thesis entitled „In Search of Money Illusion in CEE Stock Markets: The CAPM Approach” won the contest; Jekaterina Žuka from Riga Technical University with thesis „The Baltic Securities Market: Development Scenarios” was the runner-up, and Siaulius Nizinskas from Stockholm School of Economics in Riga with „Is Information Risk Priced in the Baltic Stock Markets?” was in the third place.

The stock exchange awarded the winners with EUR 1000. The annual contest has been organized since 2006 in collaboration with Latvian universities and colleges and market professionals. Its objective is to arouse students’ interest on developments in the Latvian and Baltic stock markets as well as the opportunities they are offering to investors and businesses, and to increase students’ awareness and understanding of the role of capital markets in the national economy.
