Vilnius Stock Exchange celebrates 11th anniversary

14.09.2004 VLN

On September 14, 1993, the VSE held the first trading session where shares of 22 companies were offered for trading. Today, 19 members trade in 44 listed shares and 38 issues of government debt at VSE.

In 11 eleven years of trading on the VSE, 2421 trading sessions were held. Securities were traded in a total of 426 thousand transactions for an aggregate of LTL 16 bn (EUR 4.6 bn). During 1993-2004 the total market capitalization augmented by 290 times from LTL 70 million (EUR 20 mln) to LTL 20 bn (EUR 5.8 bn).

Privatization of the VSE and its eventual integration into OMX was the most significant event of the recent year. Already in 2005 the VSE intends to introduce in Lithuania the new trading system SAXESS, which as of this fall is operational in all Nordic and Baltic stock exchanges. In addition to implementing a single trading system, market structures and rules will be harmonized.

“The VSE’s incorporation into OMX, which owns and operates exchanges in Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn and Riga, crowned the eleventh year of our business. Today, rapid integration of the Lithuanian securities market into the Nordic and Baltic market is at the top of our agenda. All foreseen changes will increase the efficiency and liquidity of markets and offer more benefits to members, investors and issuers”, said Dalia Jasulaityte, Chairman of Management Board of VSE.
