The  terminal  of  the Stock Company Ventspils nafta , transhipping oil

and oil products, has published already the six review on the impact of

its business activities on the environment, the company's environmental

policy,  its  implementation  and  further  plans  in  this  field. The

terminal  of  JSC  Ventspils  nafta  was the first in Latvia commencing

publication  of  Environmental  Review  in  1998,  and it has become an

integral  part  of  public  information  looking back every year on the

achievements and defining new goals.

This  year  the  Environmental Review is published by the subsidiary of

JSC  Ventspils  nafta  -  Ventspils  nafta  termināls Ltd., which since

October 2003 has undertaken receipt, storage and transhipment functions

and  activities  in  environmental protection within the corporation of

JSC Ventspils nafta .

Since  2003  the  most  important  fact in respect of the environmental

review  publication  is  receipt  of certificates for compliance to the

requirements  of  the  new  version  of the international standards ISO

9001:2000 and 14001:1996 received by Ventspils nafta termināls Ltd. 

Certification  according  to  ISO  is  not  only  a confirmation of the

company's  effort  over  several  years and financial contributions for

improvement  of  the  terminal  to  be in accord with the international

standards  -  since May 2004 Latvia is a full-scale member state of the

EU, and international certification in this context is one of the major

factors for participation in the programmes and projects of the EU.

Ventspils nafta termināls Ltd . has defined the following main business

goals   for   2004:   compliance  of  oil  and  oil  products  storage,

transhipment   technological   processes   to   the  new  environmental

legislation, continuation of reduction of historically formed pollution

in  separate  areas  in  the  territory,  as  well  as  improvement  of

information forwarding to the interested parties on the achievements of

Ventspils nafta termināls in the sphere of environmental protection.

Already  after  publishing  of the Environmental Review Ventspils nafta

termināls Ltd . has submitted the necessary documents for supplementing

of the environment protection licence, allowing the terminal to receive

oil also by tankers. The supplementing of the licence is connected with

intentions  of  Ventspils  nafta termināls Ltd . to extend the range of

the offered services.

In  order to reduce the hazards caused by possible pollution to health,

property  of  people and environment and the potential consequences, in

May 2004 Ventspils nafta termināls Ltd. received, as prescribed by law,

the  integrated  permit  of  B  category  polluting  activities,  where

activities for oil receipt by sea are also included.
