Grindeks joins Global Compact

07.05.2002, Grindeks, RIG

On May 6, 2002 JSC "Grindeks" Chairman of Supervisory Board Valdis
Jākobsons and Chairman of Management Board Jeļena Borcova signed a
letter addressed to the UNO Secretary General Kofi Annan, stating that
the company is joining the international movement Global Compact.
Global Compact is a way for a business to demonstrate its corporate
social responsibility. It is a contract between businesses aimed at
social and business environment development and environment protection.
It consists of nine general principles, which voice that corporations
have to comply with human rights, employment rights, and have to care
for environment. The companies who have joined the movement (currently
several hundreds worldwide) demonstrate to the society their
understanding and pro-activity in corporate social responsibility, thus
creating a positive public image. These corporations prove that
globalisation may be of benefit to various social groups. Already now
"Grindeks" complies with all nine Global Compact principles. The
company has a social policy in place that provides for social security
of the employees. Collective Agreement is being signed each year for
already an number of year in row; the company strictly observes the
employment rights. The company cares for environment, which is
evidenced by the Environment Management Certificate ISO 14001, granted
to "Grindeks" in 2001.
